During colonial times, many Africans were traded for slavery in America. When Abraham Lincoln abolished slavery, many started searching for their roots. For years, Rastafarians from Jamaica have gone to live in Shashamane Ethiopia, a land that the late Emperor Haile Selassie of Ethiopia gave to them. Today, many are happy to be home!

WHO IS LEONARD HOWELL?

On May 23, 1954 the Colonial police under orders from Alexander Bustamante invaded and burnt Pinnacle, a self sustaining community founded by Leonard P. Howell, the first Rasta.

 

A Pinnacle survivor, Sister Audrey shares a few thoughts and memories about the times spent at the birthplace of the Ras Tafari movement in Jamaica.

Pinnacle is 500+ acres of land in St. Catherine, Jamaica; given to the Rastafari community by Leonard Howell. Now we are in danger of loosing this Heritage. PINNACLE was acquired by Leonard P. Howell for RasTafari Brothers & Sisters to Live, Learn and Grow within the context of their Indigenous African Heritage.  It is the Birthplace of the Culture .

SELF SUFFICIENT 'PINNACLE'

Rastafarians in Jamaica have formed a protest campaign to return to Pinnacle, the island's first Rastafarian village. The 'Occupy Pinnacle' movement, which includes Bob Marley's granddaughter Donisha Prendergast and other Rastafarian leaders, is demanding the government return some 473 acres of land.

At the beginning of the last century, the young Leonard Percival Howell (1893 – 1981) left Jamaica, became a sailor and travelled the world. On his way, he chanced upon all the ideas that stirred his time.........With this cocktail of ideas Leonard “Gong” Howell returned to Jamaica and founded Pinnacle, the first Rasta community in 1939.
